PREPARATION FOR EXTERNAL NATURAL STONE SURFACES

Prior to sealing an external natural stone surface, it is important to ensure the surface is correctly prepared. Good preparation of a natural stone patio, path or driveway will go along way to ensuring the finished project looks as good as possible.

With most types of natural stone surfaces that are laid outdoors, it does not take long before they are 'attacked' by various forms of algae, moss, mould and lichens. This is because they are generally very porous and hold a lot of water. The water that is held within the natural stone creates the perfect environment for these forms of surface growth to flourish.

If the natural stone is in poor condition with a large spread of algae growth, it may be necessary to pre-treat the surface of the natural stone with a potent anti-fungicide. This should be left for 3-5 days to take full effect and kill off any live growth that may be present. Once this has been done, the natural stone can be pressure cleaned thoroughly which will remove any dead algae, mould or moss.

Once the surface of the natural stone has been given sufficient time to dry off, usually 2-3 days, it can then be sealed using a high quality natural stone sealer from Smartseal.

PREPARATION FOR EXTERNAL INTERNAL NATURAL STONE SURFACES

Natural stone surfaces that are outside need a lot more surface preparation than those inside as they are subject to more intensive wear and general weathering. Natural stone laid internally needs less cleaning but may need specialist cleaning fluids applied to clean off any dirt or staining that may be present. Special stone cleaners are often used to ensure internal stone tiles on floors and walls are cleaned thoroughly prior to sealing. These stone cleaners are often 'ammonia free' to avoid causing damage to the surface of the natural stone.

If a pressure washing unit is used inside a property to clean dirty floor tiles, it is always necessary to use a vacuum recovery pump to 'suck up' any excess water that may be present while the cleaning process is taking place. Excess water left to dry can leave unsightly stains on the floor and defeat the object of cleaning.
